Long Island Housing Services functions as the only dedicated fair housing agency serving all of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
A Special Message
Thank you for your interest in Long Island Housing Services. LIHS has been promoting fair housing on Long Island since 1969. With your donation we will work to promote racial and economic integration and equal housing opportunity throughout Long Island; to reduce and eliminate unlawful housing discrimination, to encourage the development of low-income and affordable housing, and to educate and assist the public regarding housing rights and opportunities in the region.
Our Fair Housing program aims to assists individuals and organizations with housing discrimination complaints and exercise their fair housing rights; initiate investigations to identify, document, and eliminate systemic housing discrimination; advocates for policies and programs that advance the development of more open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and engages in outreach and educational activities to increase public awareness about fair housing rights.
Whether you are a tenant or a landlord, our Landlord/Tenant Counseling Program helps you deal with issues related to security, eviction, habitability, rights, handicapped access, and more.
Many homeowners throghout Long Island find themselves struggling to make mortgage payments. We have HUD-approved Housing Counselors and Attorneys who can talk to you about your options. We will review your loan information and financials, discuss your options, and help you to make the best plan. If your bank has started a foreclosure action, our Attorneys can assist you to file a Pro Se Answer to your Summons and Complaint, or provide limited legal representation at Settlement Conference. Our attorneys can explain the legal process, assist you to negotiate with the bank’s attorney, and advocate for your best option.
Many homeowners desperate to save their homes from foreclosure have paid thousands of dollars to companies and individuals who promised to help save their homes and avoid foreclosure with either a loan modification or with a mortgage rescue plan. Sadly, many of these have been SCAM operators– taking money, but not providing any help—only getting the homeowner in more debt! Our Foreclosure Rescue Scam Prevention Program helps to educate the public and help victims report scams to the proper authorities.
Long Island Housing Services, Inc. recommends that you seek out housing counseling before you purchase your new home. We are now affiliated with a program from eHome America that provides convenient access to an Online Homebuyer’s Education Course. After completing the 8-hour online course, homebuyers and contacting a Long Island Housing Services’ Housing Counselor for a 1-hour follow-up session, you qualify for various first-time homeownership programs, including down payment assistance and some bank programs.
